The Harmony congregation was founded in 1828 as one of the first
congregations of the Methodist Protestant Church. This branch of Methodism, a
predecessor of our current United Methodist church, was founded around the issue
of an increased voice for the laity in the governing of the national church. Our
original church building was a log sanctuary located in the Little Georgetown
area. This site was used as a hospital by both sides of the Civil War, and six
unknown soldiers are laid to rest in the church cemetery there.
The foundation and the cemetery are still maintained by the Harmony trustees.
the Civil War had taken its toll on the area, and a new church was established
on Nestle Quarry Road. This site still serves as our church cemetery.
Now.....
Even though U.S. 11 has been all but replaced with Interstate
81, our church continues to grow along with the community. During the 1980's and
1990's, the church's old sanctuary held standing-room only crowds. A decision
was made to build a new sanctuary. Our sanctuary was completed in 1995, and is
the third one on this site.
For most of its history, Harmony has been a small congregation, served by
student pastors and sharing its pastor with one or more other congregations.
Since, Harmony has been a "charge", sharing its pastor with Mount Wesley U.M.C.
For most of our history there has been a quick succession of pastors, until 1968
when Rev. Allan Boehl began his twenty-five year pastorate with us. Our current
pastor, Rev. Ray Roberson, began his ministry with us in 1997.
Harmony is a community church, with many of our members' histories with this
congregation going back several generations. In recent years, we have been
blessed by an influx of new members, reflecting the growth of the community and
the Eastern Panhandle. We welome you to our church family and invite you to
become a part of our heritage.
Below are some pictures of the cornerstones as curently found at our church.
